Connor Baxter wins Day 1, the World Series Sprint Racing

Global Surf News, 29 April, 2013 : – - Connor Baxter (Starboard) builds on his momentum in 2013 with a win on day 1 of the Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam, the World Series Sprint Racing. With a stacked field of athlete featuring amongst the world’s best paddlers, Connor was able to work his way through the heats, and keep ahead of arch rival, Kai Lenny (Naish) to take the all important win.

Today’s sprint course featured a triangle format, that tested the athletes speed off the start, buoy turns and acceleration towards the finish, providing a dynamic technical course for the competitors, but also a spectacle for the assembled and passionate crowds.

Kai Lenny settles for second but prepares for long distance

Kai Lenny (Naish) puts on a strong performance in the sprint racing, but is unable to overtake Connor Baxter (Starboard) in the final, despite some tight buoy turns that saw Kai come right up on Connor. However, Kai Lenny is already preparing to get one back on his arch rival in the long distance race tomorrow, that will feature a 12km course that will follow the magnificent Ubatuba Coastline.

Mo Freitas fires all cylinders to finish in an impressive 3rd

Feeling right at home back here in Ubatuba after his win in the World Surfing Tour event here back in December, the young phenom Mo Freitas (Body Glove/Focus SUP) once again impresses the crowds and fellow athletes alike with a strong performance here at the World Series Sprints to take 3rd place behind Kai Lenny (Naish) and Connor Baxter (Starboard). Mo will be looking to consolidate on today’s result in the long distance tomorrow and then looking ahead to next week’s surfing, he will be hoping to repeat his last year’s historic performance with a view to a strong result in the prestigious Grand Slam overall standings (surf & race).

Zane Schweitzer puts on another strong performance

There is no doubt that Zane Schweitzer (Starboard) is on a roll this year after a tough year in 2012. After finishing in an incredible 4th place in Chile, Zane went onto win the Abu Dhabi All Stars with a win in the surf and 3rd place in the racing. Now here in Ubatuba, Zane once again shows formidable form finishing in a worthy 4th place in the star studded final. With this kind of momentum, you can expect great things from Zane this week in Ubatuba both in the racing and the surf.

Kody Kerbox & Noa Ginella round up the Sprint Race Final

The Hawaii dominated Final was rounded up by another 2 incredible athletes: in 5th, Kody Kerbox (Naish) continues his devastating form, while Noa Ginella (Naish) from Oahu’s NorthShore earns his spot in the Final, having to settle for 6th. Both Kody and Noa are strong distance paddlers, so expect great things from these 2 young athletes as we go into day two of the Stand Up World Series here in Ubatuba.

Barbara Brasil wins the Women’s World Series Division

With a stacked Women’s Final, it is Barbara Brasil (Starboard) from Brasilia who puts on a dominant performance to secure victory here at Stop 2 of the 2013 Stand Up World Series. The competition in the women’s fleet was intense, as they battled for position throughout the course culminating in this strong finish for Barbara. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s action from the women here at the Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam, with the long distance race scehduled to kick of at 2pm.

The Amateur divisions meet with a passionate following

The extensive Amateur and Fun Race divisions met with a passionate and emotional crowd today here at Day 1 of the Stand Up World Series, as spectators cheered on the focused participants as they each crossed the finish line to dramatic applause. It was exciting to see such a strong and passionate response to the Ubatuba Pro World Series Racing event taking place for the first time here in 2013, and even more exciting to see the depth of developing talent on the rise in Brazil. There is no doubt that the country will become strong players in the racing world, as they already are in Surfing with World Champion Leco Salazar at their lead.

Stay tuned to the live broadcast and Zane Schweitzer show

Stay tuned to www.standupworldtour.com/brazil.php for the broadcast from Day 2 of the Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam, live from Praia do Centro. It will all start at 1.30pm with the Zane Schweitzer Show featuring local stand out Vinicius Martins (Starboard), Kody Kerbox (Naish) from Maui and Casper Steinfath (Naish) from Denmark, and lead right into the start of the World Series Long Distance Race at around 2pm (local time), so make sure not to miss the action live from Praia do Centro, Ubatuba

• The highlights of the Stand Up World Tour in Abu Dhabi. Benefiting from the mechanical consistency and level playing field that the wave pool gives the competition, an all new format was introduced for the event, where for the first 3 rounds, it is not man on man, but everyone against everyone, as they battled it out for the best scores to advance through to the quarterfinals. Out of the 3 rights in round one, 3 lefts in round 2 and 3 closeouts in round 3, it was the best wave from each that counted towards their overall result and chance of qualifying directly into the quarterfinals

Noosa Crooks Jeep Festival of Surfing

Day One: Sunday, 10th March Early rain gave way to glorious sunshine today, First Point Noosa gifting all competitors with beautifully groomed corduroy lines for the early rounds of the SurfTech SUP Menʼs and Womenʼs Opens and the 10-Foot division.Super SUP Sunday saw breath-taking action from the paddlers, both Beau Nixon and Andy Davies entering all three divisions, the Open and 10-Foot as well as the 5km Battle of the Paddle. Nixon collected close second places in the Open and 10-Foot, defeated by a blazing Keahi DeAboitz and Woogie Marsh respectively.Over 30 competitors took to the water for the 5km Battle of the Paddle. A performance of ironman and woman proportions saw competitors completing four laps of a course that sent them out to sea before bringing them back to shore for a beach run. Jake Jensen tore through the field, comfortably taking the win from Andy Davies in a close-fought second.

The Vetshopaustralia.com.au Exhibition brought four-legged loggers to the fore. A favourite of spectators, the exhibition featuring surfing doggies, hanging paws and hanging on for dear life as their owners navigated their way through the lineup. Bringing smiles all round to the beach, the perilous puppies kickstarted a wonderful evening of camaraderie. Paul Jones finds his feet with is best friend, to take out the Dog Surfing

The traditional hoʼokupu ceremony drew together the international contingent for a blessing of the ocean and festival. And, as the sun slowly set over LagunaBay, all surfers, competitors and spectators alike, were invited to paddle out and join hands in the lineup, reinforcing the aloha spirit so evident at the Noosa Cricks Jeep Festival of Surfing 2013.

SUP Race Coolum Beach a long paddle to Abu Dhabi SUPs SUPER SUNDAY

Day One of the Noosa Cricks Jeep Festival of Surfing, and the action couldnot have come thicker or faster. Super SUP Sunday saw all festival divisionsof Stand Up Paddle events taking place, from opening heats to grand finales.A mighty field of exceptional surfers took to the beautifully clean line up ofFirst Point Noosa, the SurfTech Open Menʼs, Open Womenʼs and 10-footdivisions reveling in the conditions.Outstanding in their early heats, Keahi DeAboitz, Jackson Close and BeauNixon (all QLD) soared through their heats to progress into the final whilst, straight from a second place in the international SUP event in Peru, Shakira

Westdorp lead the field with confidence to be joined by Jenny Ryan (QLD),Melissa McManus (NSW), Erin Dark (NSW), Maria Kingi (NZ) and HawaiiʼsLynn Blomfield in the final.Despite Beau Nixon leading for much of the heat with a very solid collection of waves, it was Keahi DeAboitz who brought some phenomenal shortboard maneouvres to the field, exhibiting a culmination of his surfing, kiteboarding and SUP skills for the win.

Nixon was again denied in the win in the 10-Foot division in similar fashion.Leading the field for the majority of the final, it was a last-minute wave that gave Woogie Marsh the longest ride of the heat for the division victory.Erin Darkʼs finals performance was exceptional, an outstanding wave bringing her from fifth to second. But it wasnʼt enough to overcome Shakira Westdorp, the young Gold Coast paddler untouchable throughout the 20-minute heat. In the 5km Battle of the Paddle, top seeds Beau OʼBrien and Molly Walker entered the water as firm favourites. But by mid-stage, it was clear that Jake Jensen was going to be the biggest challenger, taking a profound lead from the rest of the field, OʼBrien with much to do in second place, Andy Davies a solid third. Molly Walker didnʼt disappoint, joined by Sondra Purser to lead the womenʼsfield.

Mark Hatfull said he was happy to present Prizes donated by his Company Quiver Kaddy to these Sports men and women who , some are representing   Australia  on the world stage , and with dogmen on the stage as Compare is always a bit of fun  ,HO Ho

Ubatuba hosts Stand Up World Tour event

2504-sup_ubatuba_[1]The Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam will kick off this weekend

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 April, 2013 : – - The Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam will kick off this weekend in the Center of Ubatuba town, at Praia do Centro. Featuring a selection of the World’s leading paddlers matching up against Brazil’s very best, this weekend’s World Series Racing promises to be some of the most exciting and fiercely contested yet on the World Series.

The event will also feature an open division for both women and men, as well as an U16 class, all with a shorter course for the long distance racing and different board divisions starting on Saturday morning and continuing through Sunday. So there is something for everyone here in Ubatuba, so make sure to stay tuned to www.standupworldtour.com and www.standupworldseries.com, as well as our Facebook pages.

World Class line up of athletes here in Ubatuba, Brazil

The starting line will feature many of the world’s very best and fastest racers as we embark on Stop 2 of the 2013 Stand Up World Series. Wearing the yellow Jersey after his win at the Aragas Magallanes Paddle Challenge in Chile last month, Connor Baxter (Starboard) will be looking to consolidate on his Series lead. Meanwhile, 2012 World Champion Kai Lenny (Naish) will be looking to get one back on Connor coming into this second South American stop of the 2013 Series, after the battle to the end last month in Chile.

Other leading racers to be featured in the Ubatuba Racing

From the Viking Casper Steinfath (Naish) from Denmark who seems to be on staggering form this year, finishing in 3rd in Chile behind Connor and Kai, but also winning the beach race in Peru, to the ever impressive Maui crew in the form of Kody Kerbox (Naish) and Zane Schweitzer (Starboard), our Mexican representative Fernando Stalla (Rogue) and Italian Ambassador Leonard Nika (Starboard), the battle is on this weekend in Ubatuba, so be prepared for some of the most exciting racing of the season.

The other factor to take into consideration is the wealth of Brazilian talent that will be stepping up to take on the greats: from Vinicius Martins who put on a great show in Chile, to Bruno Pitanga and Luiz Carlo, so stay tuned to standupworldtour.com, the main home base for this Grand Slam event, but also www.standupworldseries.com and our facebook pages.

Coming next week: 2nd stop of the Stand Up World Tour

Once the weekend of racing is over, the will be a couple of lay days on Monday and Tuesday for the riders to recuperate and prepare to get back into action for Stop two of the 2013 Stand Up World Tour and 4th consecutive year here in Brazil: the Ubatuba Pro at the magnificent Itamambuca Beach.

With a stacked field of the World’s best Stand up paddlesurfers, the battle will be fiercer than ever this year at Itamambuca Beach, as all athletes have stepped up their game and are battling it out for not only the event win, but the prestigious 2013 Title.

The Opening evening of the event on Tuesday 30th April will also celebrate Santos born athlete Leco Salazar’s 2012 World Title at home in Brazil with the presentation of the perpetual World Championship Tour Trophy brought all the way from its home, at Turtle Bay on Oahu’s Fabled North Shore.

After Leco’s name is added to Kai Lenny’s (Naish), this hand crafted Ulu Wood (from the Hawaiian bread fruit tree) board built and provided by the legendary Tom ‘Pohaku’ Stone will be returning to Hawaii to be put on display in the all new Watershed in Turtle Bay for all the world to see.

This year’s fleet is a truly global melting pot of talent

The action is destined to be through the roof at this year’s Ubatuba Pro, with youth phenom Mo Freitas (Body Glove/Focus SUP) returning to try and repeat his groundbreaking win here in 2012. In order to do this, Mo will once again have to fend of Current World Champion Leco Salazar, 2x World Champion Kai Lenny (Naish) and 2012 World Title Contender Sean Poynter (Starboard), not to mention the entire fleet featuring the very best in the world Indeed, the list of talent at this year’s Ubatuba Pro is staggering: from Abu Dhabi All Star Zane Schweitzer (Starboard), fresh of his impressive win in the UAE, Kody Kerbox (Naish) after his 3rd places in the UAE and Sunset and Robin Johnston (Mistral) who started the year of with a 2nd at Sunset, to Australia’s Justin Holland (Starboard), Beau Nixon (Naish) and Keahi de Aboitiz (JP Australia), the battle will be intense.

Brazil to provide phenomenal competition to the visitors

Of course the Vaz brothers (Art in Surf), Ian and Caio will be leading characters to watch out for here in Ubatuba, both posting incredible performances in the past 6 months, from the Location X Finals in the BVI, to earlier this month in ABu Dhabi. However, the dark horses will also be extremely dangerous for the visiting international athletes as they look to stand out and make their impression felt on their home turf.

From Renato Wanderley, Carlos Bahia and Alexandre Magrinho, to Luis Saraiva, Wallace Morris and many others, the Brazilians are always strong at home and will doubtless create some surprises here in Ubatuba. Also to watch out for is Remi Quique, resident here in Brazil, but of French origin, having done well here back in 2010 in Ibiraquera and then storming back onto the scene earlier this month in Abu Dhabi at thbe All Stars event.

Tune into standupworldtour.com for the live broadcast

So make sure to tune in live to the broadcast from the Ubatuba Pro Grand Slam at www.standupworldtour.com (full live broadcast schedule to be posted later today on facebook and at this site), as history is once again made here in the region of Ubatuba, Brazil for Stop 2 of both the Stand Up World Racing World Series and World Surfing Tour.

Reef recycles packing Styrofoam with board blanks in mind

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 April, 2013 : – - They say surfers are an indicator species. We are the first affected when the natural environment gets degraded. Hence, we are watchdogs, activists and trend-setters. However, foam and fiberglass, the two materials that make up the very symbol of our pursuit, are both toxic materials.

So, we’re also a bit hypocritical. Fortunately, Reef has joined forces with SustainableSurf.org to help create a program where we can recycle our packing styrofoam so that it may one day be a surfboard blank. It’s a small step, but if we’re going to pass on what we love, leading by example is as important as a solid cutback.

2013 AUSTRALIAN LONGBOARD SURFING OPEN

Well the 2013 Australian Longboard Surfing Open is done and dusted for another year. Once again Kingscliff proved an ideal location for the event with 5 days of good weather and contestable waves.

Competitors in the ASP LQS divisions were the first to hit the surf and we ran both the men’s and  the Cancer Institute NSW women’s divisions all day Wednesday in 2-3ft surf with live scores over the internet. We were again fortunate to attract 2 x ASP World Champion Taylor Jensen from California and former World Champion Harley Ingleby, who set the bench mark from the start. This left professional competitors from Brazil, Japan. NZ, Reunion Island, Hawaii, Taiwan and from around Australia playing catch up.

Thursday saw the Mohawk Noserider in action in some of the best conditions we had for this years event. With competitors only scoring points from maneuvers performed on the nose, surfing was progressive and exciting. Next up were the SUP surfing divisions for pros, amateurs and women.

Conditions were very similar on the Friday which saw those in age divisions strut their stuff plus qtr finals and some semis.

Saturday was a huge day with semis before an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the Most Surfers Riding the Same Wave. Unfortunately unfavorable surf conditions thwarted this attempt. The surfing concluded with the inaugural Interclub Teams Challenge which was dominated by Kingscliff Boardriders. That afternoon 5 bands entertained us on the lawn in front of the Cudgen SLSC along with the Beach Girl Bikini Contest.

The surf continued to provide messy 3ft plus conditions for the Sunday, but the bank in front of the SLSC provided finalists with an excellent platform on which to impress the judges and the crowds. Mid morning saw the Battle of the Paddle which was again won by Travis Grant. Harley Ingleby completed the double winning both the ASP LQS men’s divisions from Taylor Jensen and the Mohawk Noserider from Lawrence Harkness, while in the Cancer Institute NSW ASP LQS Women’s final West Australia’s Georgia Young defeated Crystal Dzigas from Hawaii
