2013 AUSTRALIAN LONGBOARD SURFING OPEN

Well the 2013 Australian Longboard Surfing Open is done and dusted for another year. Once again Kingscliff proved an ideal location for the event with 5 days of good weather and contestable waves.

Competitors in the ASP LQS divisions were the first to hit the surf and we ran both the men’s and  the Cancer Institute NSW women’s divisions all day Wednesday in 2-3ft surf with live scores over the internet. We were again fortunate to attract 2 x ASP World Champion Taylor Jensen from California and former World Champion Harley Ingleby, who set the bench mark from the start. This left professional competitors from Brazil, Japan. NZ, Reunion Island, Hawaii, Taiwan and from around Australia playing catch up.

Thursday saw the Mohawk Noserider in action in some of the best conditions we had for this years event. With competitors only scoring points from maneuvers performed on the nose, surfing was progressive and exciting. Next up were the SUP surfing divisions for pros, amateurs and women.

Conditions were very similar on the Friday which saw those in age divisions strut their stuff plus qtr finals and some semis.

Saturday was a huge day with semis before an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the Most Surfers Riding the Same Wave. Unfortunately unfavorable surf conditions thwarted this attempt. The surfing concluded with the inaugural Interclub Teams Challenge which was dominated by Kingscliff Boardriders. That afternoon 5 bands entertained us on the lawn in front of the Cudgen SLSC along with the Beach Girl Bikini Contest.

The surf continued to provide messy 3ft plus conditions for the Sunday, but the bank in front of the SLSC provided finalists with an excellent platform on which to impress the judges and the crowds. Mid morning saw the Battle of the Paddle which was again won by Travis Grant. Harley Ingleby completed the double winning both the ASP LQS men’s divisions from Taylor Jensen and the Mohawk Noserider from Lawrence Harkness, while in the Cancer Institute NSW ASP LQS Women’s final West Australia’s Georgia Young defeated Crystal Dzigas from Hawaii
